Without doubt, the most important — and by far the most ignored — safety component of any vehicle is its tires. Four contact patches, the surface areas where the tires are in contact with the pavement, control how well the car handles, stops and accelerates because they provide the sole traction for the vehicle. A great deal is expected from our tires and the vehicle’s well being — not to mention our own — depends upon how well they do their job.
Tire technology advances over the years have resulted in an immense range of characteristics that can be tailored to any vehicle or driver’s preferences. Tread design, rubber compounds, inner cord structure, tire profile (aspect ratio), speed, tread life and load rating all factor into how a tire can be designed for traction and braking in specific or varying weather conditions.

A Chinese government outburst in response to a stiff tariff imposed by the Obama Administration on Chinese-made tires appeared to raise the specter of trade protectionism at a time of a fragile global economic recovery.
In official statements over the weekend, Beijing strongly protested the 35% tariff imposed by President Barack Obama in response to a complaint by the United Steelworkers. Beijing said it would investigate alleged dumping of U.S. automobile parts and chicken products in China and study the possibility of filing an unspecified trade complaint with the World Trade Organization.

President Barack Obama has slapped punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires entering the United States from China in a decision that could anger the strategically important Asian powerhouse but placate union supporters important to his health care push at home.
Obama had until Sept. 17 to accept, reject or modify a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that a rising tide of Chinese tires into the U.S. hurts American producers. A powerful union, United Steelworkers, blames the increase for the loss of thousands of American jobs.

On the plant floor at RDH Tire & Retread in Cleveland, N.C., about 60 workers do nothing all day but retread giant tires that have come off of mining equipment—giant meaning 12 feet tall, 40 feet around, and 13,000 pounds. A tire retreading shop is fairly quiet as factory settings go. You’ll hear lots of dull thuds as hammers whack away at the vulcanized rubber that makes up most of the tire. There’s an occasional whoosh of an air hose sweeping away debris and dust. Now and then, high-pitched whines pierce the air as workers grind broken bits of metal that make up the tire’s interior radial belt.

When energy conservation and environmental preservation are addressed in automotive terms, talk naturally revolves around the engine… Yet the tires, sole contact between the car and the road, also play a major role… to the point of becoming “green” themselves!

As fuel economy regulations tighten and consumer demand for green transportation increases, tire manufacturers worldwide are adding precipitated silica to tread formulations to improve fuel efficiency, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and enhance tire performance and handling.
Reducing rolling resistance, or the amount of energy spent to move a vehicle, is an increasingly important solution to decreasing fuel consumption. In fact, tires are responsible for 20% to 30% of a vehicle’s fuel use.

If the tires are wearing evenly there is no need to rotate the tires on a vehicle. If irregular wear becomes apparent or if the wear rate on the tires is perceptively different (from axle to axle for drive tires and side to side for steer tires), then the tires should be rotated in such a manner as to alleviate the condition.
Irregular or uneven tire treadwear patterns may be arrested and/or reversed by proper rotation of the tire to another vehicle wheel position (and possibly reversing the direction of rotation). This is particularly true of free rolling wheel positions such as steer and trailer tires. In fact, periodic rotation of steer tires can actually prevent – or at least delay – the onset of irregular wear. It is recommended that tires be rotated at about 50% of their expected service life.

Unless you want to pick tires for your vehicles based on gut feelings, intuition or data gathered by your peers, a good recordkeeping system to track tire performance and costs in your fleet is vital to making wise tire decisions. And whether your records are on paper or on high-powered tire-specific software – such as Goodyear’s TVTRACK or TCC from DokterBan– is up to you.
